Plan an attunement change

Finding a magic item and being ready to use it are different steps. This guide follows the 2024 general attunement rules through practical examples so you can record which items are active and plan the required rests.

Start with the item’s description

Check whether the item requires attunement and whether it lists a prerequisite. If it does not require attunement, it does not occupy one of your three general attunement slots. If it does, you normally receive only its nonmagical benefits until the bond is formed, unless the description says otherwise.

A magic Shield that requires attunement can still function as an ordinary Shield before attunement. Its magical properties become available after you successfully attune and satisfy its requirements.

Example: your first attuned item

Suppose you have no attuned items and already know the new item’s properties. Spend a Short Rest focused on that item while in physical contact with it. If the rest is completed without interruption, record the item as attuned.

If you instead use a Short Rest to learn what the item does, that same rest cannot also be the attunement rest. Plan a separate one. A normal Short Rest lasts 1 hour, so these are distinct periods of downtime.

Example: replacing one of three items

Suppose your character is already attuned to three items and wants to use a fourth. Simply attempting to attune to the new item fails under the general limit. First end an existing bond.

For an ordinary, noncursed item, spend a Short Rest focused on ending that attunement. Once the slot is free, spend a separate Short Rest attuning to the replacement. If its properties are already known, that example requires two focused Short Rests. Learning its properties by resting would be an additional step.

Record the old item as unattuned when its bond ends. Record the new item as attuned only after the new attunement rest succeeds. The examples assume no specific feature changes the general rules.

What ends the bond?

  • You no longer meet an attunement prerequisite.
  • The item has been more than 100 feet away for at least 24 hours.
  • Your character dies.
  • Another creature attunes to the item.
  • You voluntarily end the bond with a focused Short Rest, unless the item is cursed.

Example: lending an item to another character

Handing an item to a party member does not immediately end your attunement. However, when that character successfully attunes to it, your bond ends. The item is now using the recipient’s attunement capacity.

Removing or putting down an item is not itself one of the listed endings. Its description may still require it to be worn, held, or otherwise used in a particular way to benefit from it. Attunement and those use requirements are separate checks.

A short checklist before the next encounter

  • Count the items that currently require and have your attunement.
  • Check each item’s prerequisites and whether it must be worn or held.
  • Do not attune to multiple copies of the same item.
  • Check for a curse before assuming you can voluntarily end the bond.
  • Record completed changes on the character sheet and confirm any resulting bonuses.
